How to Start a Company in Japan and Obtain a Business Manager Visa (KEIEI・KANRI VISA)

Step 1: Establishing a Company in Japan

Even while residing abroad, it is possible for a foreign national to establish a company in Japan. However, a local representative or agent is usually required.

  1. Choose a Company Type:
    – Common choices: Kabushiki Kaisha (Corporation) or Godo Kaisha (Limited Liability Company)
  2. Create a Business Plan:
    – A practical and sustainable business plan is essential, especially for the visa application.
  3. Decide and Deposit Capital:
    – A minimum of 5 million yen is generally required to meet visa conditions.
    – Funds should be transferred from your overseas account to a Japanese bank account (a representative’s account may be used initially).
  4. Company Registration:
    – Articles of Incorporation need to be notarized (for Corporation).
    – Registration at the Legal Affairs Bureau is required (can be done via a representative).
  5. Secure a Physical Office:
    – A real, physical office is mandatory (virtual offices are not accepted).
    – Lease agreement is required.

Step 2: Applying for a Business Manager Visa (COE Application)

To enter Japan, you need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for the Business Manager Visa.

  1. Submit to:
    – Regional Immigration Bureau in Japan (usually through a local legal representative)
  2. Required Documents (main ones):

– COE application form
– Certificate of company registration, Articles of Incorporation
– Office lease contract
– Business plan
– Proof of capital (bank statement, etc.)
– Resume of the applicant showing relevant experience

  • 3. Processing Time:
    – Usually takes 2 to 3 months

Step 3: Visa Issuance and Entry into Japan

  1. Once COE is issued:
    – Apply for a visa at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country
  2. After Visa is Granted:
    – Enter Japan (initial visa duration is typically 1 year)
    – Complete resident registration, seal registration, and company operation notifications upon arrival
